Itinerary

DAY 1

We meet you at your hotel to depart and go to the province of Paruro (2 hours driving). Upon arrival you’ll have breakfast, after which you will learn how to make the traditional drink of the Incas that they originally called ajha (corn beer), but is now known as chicha. You’ll also prepare lunch in a natural and traditional clay stove. You will then have free time to explore the town.

DAY 2

Early in the morning we start to prepare staff and food to go to the farm where you are going to do the traditional cropping of maize and prepare wathia. Wathia is a traditional way to cook using a small, clay mounded oven that is heated for one hour with fire inside. Then, we take it out of the fire and put the potatoes, beans, oqa, and sweet potatoes from the highlands and smash the clay around them and let them cook buried in the earth. The result is wathia. The day will be brightened up by local musicians. This night you can camp on the farm take care of the corn and appreciate the beautiful sky and constellations.

DAY 3

You will do a small hike to where your Tour Guide will explain to you the traditional and medicinal uses of plants. Then we will put the corn in sacks to carry it by horses to the family home. it’s possible to do this if the lama herder is already at the town. After lunch you will go to one of the traditional ovens of the town of Paruro where you will see and be actively part of preparing bread from pure wheat that we will bring with us to enjoy at the house.
